Au00a0young man who the police said entered a residential complex with the intention of commiting petty theft got stuck in the lift and had to be rescued by the fire brigade last evening.

The suspected thief, identified as Sunny Prakash Mane (18), had entered the building of a residential complex in Narayan Peth around 7.30 pm.

Mane, because of his inexperience, pressed the wrong buttons in the lift and got stuck.

"We heard someone shouting from inside the lift. We did not know who it was and so immediately informed the fire brigade, which reached the spot within 15 minutes and helped the boy out," said Srikant Bhatt, a resident.

The society president, Navin Gandhi, said that only after Mane boy was stuck in the lift did they realise that he had come with the intention of theft.

"This boy was going upstairs when he got stuck; thankfully, he was not able to steal anything," said Gandhi.

Mane was rescued after 30 minutes and taken to the Narayan Peth police chowky. Police officials said Mane looked like a petty thief; he did not have a criminal record. Police Naik R K Kamle said: "We have detained him for a day and will investigate his background. So far we have found out that he used to work in Matheran. He has no family and nowhere to go."
