Five comedians will attempt to decipher love and relationships in their show Men are from Bars at NCPA on Valentine's Day

You will want to break up on Valentine’s Day’ — goes the tagline of Homegrown Comedy India’s standup comedy show Men are from Bars.

And that has us intrigued. Maybe because we expect the usual emotional and sentimental nonsense to come our way on a day dedicated to love. But then, when you have a talented bunch of standup comedians such as Sorabh Pant, Kunal Rao, Atul Khatri, Abish Mathew and Aditi Mittal, it’s not exactly wise to expect the usual, right?
“I don’t think people are going to break up. If it’s meant to happen maybe they will, we are not going to cause it,” chuckles Rao, and adds that the idea of the show is to try and bring a few perspectives on relationships from five different points of view. Rao and Mittal are single and in the ‘dating’ phase, while Khatri and Pant are married. Mathew’s relationship status is complicated. That’s the angle we’re taking in the show. Everybody goes through these phases and we’re bringing all those perspectives in this one show. So there’s something for everyone,” he adds.
Pant might be married, but he says he has a feeling he won’t remain for long. “Out of the 30 minutes that I’m going to be on stage, at least 12 of those will see me making fun of my wife,” he reveals. And out of all the days, he chose Valentine’s Day to do that? “Well, my wedding anniversary falls on February 12, so my quota of love and romance is more or less over two days prior to Valentine’s Day,” says the funny-man.
The lone female voice in the show belongs to Mittal, who self-admittedly, is single and confused. “I think the definition of relationships is in a bit of a flux. When it comes to relationships, I’ve realised I’m absolutely incompetent. I mean, I just don’t get how long you’re supposed to wait before calling someone and what construes as a ‘connection’. I think the show’s about understanding that and more,” she says. And why exactly are the men from bars? “Men are from bars and women are the bartenders,” Rao shares his theory with a smile, “We’re completely at their mercy.” Our guess is there will be more women in the audience.
