Five persons arrested in Matunga gang rape case

A day after seven men allegedly gang-raped a 30-year-old woman, Matunga police arrested five persons in the case.

Police arrested Ganesh Pingale from his residence at Matunga Labour camp on Saturday, while the others were arrested late in the evening yesterday. According to the police, the five accused forcibly entered the victim’s house, assaulted her husband, threw him out of the house, and then raped her in her shanty located next to the railway tracks near Matunga railway station on Friday night. Police said Pingale is a friend of the main accused Sidhu with whom the victim’s husband had fought.


Pingale, who has been booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (g) (gang rape), 377 (unnatural offence), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance), was produced at the Holiday Court yesterday and has been remanded in police custody till March 20. u00a0DCP Datta Karale (zone 4) said, “Two of the accused identified as Siddhesh Nikam and Shahid Sayyed Hussain are history-sheeters, while the other three are first time offenders.”u00a0
