Head to Mayura Cake Yard, a month-old bakery in Koramangala, that leaves you spoilt for choice with a counter full of flavours

A Google search of cake shops in Koramangala is likely to throw your way overu00a0 a hundred hits. Mayura Cake Yard, the typical functional cake shop with barely any gourmet leanings, is an addition to those lists.

Over a month old, this new haunt is located at a short distance from Raheja Arcade and seems to be pinning on its location advantage.

We stopped by for a round of dessert one day, and returned satiated, not intrigued. The bright white lights in the cake shop areu00a0 enough for you to see every detail on the displayed cakes and pastries.

The counters are white too, lending the space a slightly clinical feel, something we certainly could do without. The place is essentially a take away joint and does not give you the option of sitting for a leisurely dessert session.

Choices though are many, right from the cream-laden Black Forests that can take you back to childhood memories to the sugary sweet Honey Cakes. This was going to be a binge session and we suggest the calorie conscious must opt for the closest gelato parlour instead.

We ordered a Chocolate Roll (Rs 20) as it looked quite tempting placed on the counter. Itu00a0 was regular fare with slices of sponge cake between alternate layers of chocolate and vanilla cream.

What added the extra zing to this otherwise ordinary pastry was a layer of chocolate coating right at the top. Biting into it was like being in chocolate haven. What came next was the Butterscotch Pastry (Rs 20).

Chocolate Roll

This was a simple sponge cake layered with vanilla cream and nougat bits. The combination was crunchy but a tad too sweet for our taste. We'd rate it as no more than average fare. It was the Honey Cake (Rs 15) that really did the trick. Straight out of a childhood dream, the cake was topped with honey and layered with some too.

Sprinkled with grated coconut, it took us right back in time to the bakery at the street corner around school. Mayura Cake Yard also offers packed sponge cakes and fruit cakes (Rs 65). We tasted one of them and found them quite moist and tutti fruity loaded.

It may not be one of those cake shops that will make you get intou00a0 raving mode, but it certainly gives you value for money and more than the usual dose of sweetness.
