Former tennis no. 1 Kafelnikov slams Sharapova's 'Sugarpova' candy
Compatriot & former World No 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov joins list of critics who take a dig at World No 2 Maria Sharapova for promoting an unhealthy eating option
Former World No 1 tennis ace Yevgeny Kafelnikov has joined the bandwagon of Maria ‘Sugarpova’-bashers. The retired Russian player yesterday took a dig at his compatriot for promoting sugar candy.
Kafelnikov posted a digitally altered image of a plump-looking Sharapova on Twitter with a caption: “That’s what awaits for you then you eat ‘Sugarpova’ cookies.”

Sugarpova is a range of sweets and candies launched by Sharapova two years ago and targeted at both young and old. As per Sugarpova’s website, it is a reflection of the “fun, fashionable, sweet side of the international tennis sensation.”

This is not the first time that the 27-year-old pretty Russian tennis player-cum-entrepreneur has been at the receiving of criticism for promoting calorie-rich candies. Previously, numerous obesity support groups have protested against the athlete using her stardom and popularity to influence minds about an unhealthy eating option. In 2013, the National Obesity Forum called World No 2 Sharapova “irresponsible” for encouraging both kids and adults to indulge in sweets.
Justifying her venture, Sharapova had explained at the opening of her candy lounge at this year’s Wimbledon that there is no harm in eating sweets if done so in moderation. She even said that as a kid she was rewarded with sweets and candies for doing well in her tennis matches. In fact, she revealed that she likes to treat herself to sweets or a cupcake every time she wins a match even now.
