Brush up your language skills and learn new words at Mumbai's first French games evening

Mafia is often the first choice for a party game, where everyone in the gathering may not know one another. Which is why the popular ice breaker also finds its way to game nights in the city. This event is no different, except that the game will be called Loup Garou, and if you are the moderator, you may well be saying, "Mafia, ouvrez vos yeux." As part of its Monsoon Project, Alliance Francaise de Bombay (AF) is organising a French games evening, a first of its kind event in the city.

An assortment of French card, board and video games suitable for all levels will be played. Expect the all-time favourite Scrabble with a twist. "To make the game easier, a subject will be picked. For the theme on house, for instance, participants will have to fit in French names of things that can be found in a house," explains Sheryn Mulla, executive and cultural assistant, Alliance Française de Bombay. Other games for the evening include Le jeu de sept families or Happy Families, a classic card game featuring a set of illustrations of fictional families of four different occupations, where the aim is to collect complete families. Video game enthusiasts can try their hand at Journey, White Spirit and Octadad.
While a basic knowledge of French is helpful, a team from the institute will be present at the venue to guide the participants. So, if you have been planning to learn the language, this may be a fun starting point. If you are already a student of French, this would be a good opportunity to practise it.
"We are continually trying to explore new venues for our students to make the language fun, topical and interesting to learn," says Mulla about Monsoon Project, which was started eight years ago to organise indoor engagements during the rains. The events are open to all, and have included photography, self-defence and Lindy Hop dance workshops in the past.
The next monsoon session will be a three-hour poetry workshop where participants will explore the work of French poet Jacques Prevert, and try their hand at infusing the much-loved language into their verses.
