Bandra's new seafood eatery serves the freshest fish at reasonable prices, but the preparation takes a beating

Bathed in blue light, Pebble Bay takes its aquatic theme seriously. Matching aquamarine and sand-coloured upholstery, empty fish tanks filled with pebbles and a solitary aquarium with tropical fish attempt to reinforce its seafood-centric focus. Change the name, take away the menu and you are in any North Indian family restaurant from the eighties.

But that's what the split-level Bandra eatery seems to be aiming to be: a comfortable family restaurant where the food is adapted sufficiently to please all with something on the menu for everybody. Major cuisines are covered, from coastal Indian to Punjabi, Mughlai, Continental and Chinese. Unfortunately, when satiating a universal palate is the goal, the food tastes of compromise.

Their Prawns Koliwada (Rs 375) and Sol Kadi (Rs 65) for instance, were recognisably close to the original, but the Koliwada lacked its characteristic punch and the kadi, its spicy bite. The Fish Tikka Ajwaini (Rs 325) was lovely, once you stopped concentrating on trying to discern the faintest hint of ajwain. Though tempted by a Prawns Gassi and Neer Dosa, we opted for the rather unusual Fish Do Pyaza (Rs 275) and a Kadai Murg (Rs 295). Both would have worked well even if they had been called by another name. The desserts were good; the Firni Matki (Rs 90) was thick and creamy and the Caramel Custard (Rs 120) not too sweet, but smooth. Pebble Bay has a few things going in its favour; to its credit, whether it was the prawns, rawas or the pomfret in the do pyaza, the seafood was fresh. The service is friendly and efficient, and for the prices, the portions are generous. Pity the preparations don't match up to the quality of the ingredients.
