Opposition accuses Navi Mumbai civic body of floating proposal for works already completed at new garden for kids

Fresh irregularities in Wonder Park project

New allegations of irregularities in the development of Wonder Park in Nerul have surfaced with Opposition parties in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) once again claiming the civic body is out to repeat works already completed.

This time the NMMC has put forward a proposal for construction works worth Rs 50.72 lakh at Wonder Park, while a week earlier it had brought up a proposal worth Rs 3 crore to move underground the electric cables passing over the site. The Opposition claims some of the works in the new, Rs 50.72 lakh proposal are bogus.

The latest proposal includes a work for filling up the area dug for the underground electric cables at Wonder Park, a garden-cum-recreation-centre for children to be inaugurated by NCP chief Sharad Pawar today.

Cable wars
The Opposition is now asking how the NMMC, where the civic house has the NCP in power, is already talking about filling up the area dug for underground electric wires if it had just a week ago brought up the proposal for the underground cabling work.

“The NMMC opened a tender for placing electric wires underground just a week ago, and when we alleged that the work had already been done, the administration denied it saying it had not started any work,” said Shiv Sena corporator Ratan Mandve.

“Now the same administration has brought up another proposal for filling the dug areas. How come the NMMC was able to finish the work of putting electric wires underground in just a week’s time? This is a case of serious irregularities in the engineering department of the NMMC.”

Engg dept’s reply
Refuting the allegations, the engineering department said the two proposals were for different wire types. “The works are for two different kinds of electric wires,” city engineer Mohan Dagaonkar said yesterday. “The earlier proposal is for moving high-tension wires underground while in today’s proposal, we want to make wires of streetlights go underground.”

Not convincing
Opposition corporators said they did not buy Dagaonkar’s explanation, as they could not find any streetlight wires that were not already underground.

“As per our information, wires of streetlights are laid underground at the time of installation itself,” Congress corporator Santosh Shetty said. “So which wires is NMMC going to lay underground now?”u00a0
