Kanchan defeated Nayyab Lakhani of Lady Engineers School 14-8, 16-8 in the final to lift her first MSSA title at IES Raja Shivaji Vidyasankul in Dadar yesterday.

Neha Kadam of New English School came first, while Manasi Koli of Lady Engineer School finished second.

Sukanya was introduced to the sport by her maternal grandfather Balkrishna when she was eight, during one of her summer vacations in Kankavli town of Sindhudurg district.

For Kanchan, the journey started only three years ago.

Sukanya said: “I am scared to play against Kanchan. She always defeats me even when at home. She surely deserves the title. I am really happy for her. Surprisingly, she has become a better player than me despite being introduced to the sport only recently.”

Kanchan though credits her elder sister for this victory. “I used to watch my sister and grandfather play as a kid. She used to train me whenever I needed guidance,” said Kanchan. u00a0
