A Power-Packed performance by Don Bosco's batsmen - Sahil Jadhav, 135 (17x4) and Shubham Shinde 71 saw the Matunga side win a thrilling contest by virtue of a first innings lead against last year's runner up IES VN Sule Guruji English School (Dadar) in the inter-school Giles Shield semi-final at Parsee Gymkhana yesterday. Resuming on overnight their score of 266 for 2, IES VN Sule added another 23 runs before declaring their first innings at 289 for 3.

In the morning session, Yash Rajn, who was not out on 95 the previous day, scored an unbeaten 104, laced with 14 boundaries. Aditya Pawar (13) was the last batsman to be dismissed after he was trapped in front of the wicket by off-spinner Nutan Goyal. Aman Khan remained unbeaten on seven. Medium pacer Aaryaraj Nikam was the pick of the bowlers for Bosco's with figures of two for 33, while Nutan bagged one for 17.

In reply, the Matunga outfit faltered early by losing two wickets with just one run on the board. Allan Bavachan was the first to depart after being bowled by Tanay Khandeshi, while Jyotiraditya Madane was caught in the covers by Aryan Phadtare off Ayush Ghadge. Aaryaraj (21) too was castled by Tanay. Later, Sahil and Shubham shouldered the responsibility of anchoring their team's innings. The duo put on a 161-run stand for the fourth wicket to grind down their opponents.

Just when it looked like the game was slipping away from hands of the Dadar outfit, medium pacer Hrishikesh Hatkar had Shubham caught in the covers by Harsh Salunkhe. At this stage Bosco's were 220 for 4. Bosco's lost Sahil too when he was caught at midwicket by Aditya Pawar. The Dadar team's skipper Atharva Bhosale bowled Bhushan Sawant for six to have Bosco's reeling at 278 for 6.

The match went down to the wire, with Don Bosco requiring six runs in the last eight minutes. They held their nerve and achieved the target successfully with just three minutes remaining in the day. The entire Don Bosco unit erupted in joy as they declared their first innings at 300 for 6. For VN Sule, off-spinner finished with figures of two for 63, while left-arm spinner Atharva grabbed two for 105.
