A college girl and a youth, who jumped into the waters to save her, were on Saturday feared drowned in the sea off Bandra Bandstand in Mumbai, police said.

Three college girls, all residents of Bainganwadi in suburban Govandi, aged between 18 and 19 years, had come to the seaface to picnic on Saturday morning, a senior police officer said.

They were clicking selfies when one of them, Taranum, slipped into the sea, he said. Hearing their screams, a local youth, Rajesh Walunj, jumped into the sea to rescue the girl, the officer said.

Locals then informed fire officials and Bandra police station who reached the spot immediately to launch search and rescue operation.

"We are trying to locate the duo but they are yet to be found. Fire officials along with the local fishermen continue to carry out the operations," said investigating officer P Bhosale.

However, the duo are believed to have been swept away in the high tide as they have not been traced yet, he said.
