Go, go, go Govinda: MNS defies SC order, announces 9 storey-40ft handi

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court said dahi handi human pyramids should not be over 20 feet, and only those above 18 are allowed to participate in it. The MNS party in Thane, however, has decided to go against this order and is set to organise a 40-feet high dahi handi on August 25 for which a nine-storey human pyramid will have to be built.

MNS’s Thane city chief, Avinash Jadhav has also announced a reward of Rs 11 lakh for the event, which will be held at Bhagwati Maidan. Speaking to mid-day, Jadhav said, “In Olympic Games this year, one of the participant broke his leg, did they shut down the event or stop the game? Similarly, during dahi handi, some people might get injured and we have been asking that rules and guidelines be made for the same. But only Hindu festivals are being targeted and that won’t be tolerated.”

Jadhav added that he would urge professionals to break the handi at the event. “I respect the Supreme Court’s decision so we will maintain the age stance of the verdict. But the height will be around 40-feet. I will seek pardon from SC if it’s considered an offence,” he said.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray had recently taken a dig at the SC’s verdict asking if dahi handi should be broken by standing on ladders. In the last decade, Thane has emerged as the hot spot for dahi handi festival with Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik and NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad’s events being most popular.
