A whopping 30 goals were scored on the opening day of the IHF West Zone Senior National Championship in the two matches played at the Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA) stadium in Churchgate yesterday.

Defending champions Mumbai thrashed Goa 18-1, while Maharashtra beat Gujarat 11-0 in Pool-B round-robin league matches. Mumbai coach Ramesh Pillay said: “Most of the Mumbai team boys — Tyron Pereira (captain), Amit Gowda, Sudhir Dixit, Devinder Walmiki, Sashi Topno, Victo Singh have played for various teams in the World Series Hockey so the 18-1 result is expected.

Our team is more mature compared to others and they should qualify for the All India nationals,” said Pillay. The last time MHA hosted the west zone nationals was in 2006-07.
