Inu00a0spite of repeated appeals by the police, many cooperative banks have not installed CCTV cameras. A customer of the Mahanagar Cooperative Bank paid for the lapse on the part of the bank when a somebody slipped out unnoticed with his bag containing gold worth Rs 10 lakh.






The police rushed to the bank soon after it was noticed that the bag was missing, but were left to grapple in the dark as they could get no information on suspects.

Officials of the Yerawada police station said medical shop owner Vitthal Shinde (33) from Lonikand got the shock of his life when he realised his bag containing gold was missing.Shinde came with the bag containing gold jewellery to the Mahanagar Cooperative Bank in Chandan Nagar to deposit Rs 40,000.

"I went to the counter to fill the form and suddenly realised that I had left my bag on the chair. When I turned back towards my chair, my bag was nowhere to be seen," said Shinde. "The police have tracked all the people who were present, but to no avail."

Shinde had come to the Mahanagar Cooperative Bank from the Rupee Bank, half-a-kilometre away in Chandan Nagar. Yerawada police station officers PI Dipak Sawant, Vishwanath Ghnavat ACP Kalidas Suryavanshi and DCP Sanjay Jadhav rushed to the Mahanagar Cooperative Bank when the theft was discovered. The dog squad was also called in, but the trail went cold at the nearby vegetable market.PSI Chimaji Madhe is investigating the case.

Bank manager Santaram Kalaskar said the incident took place when the branch manager had gone to deposit bank cash at the Pune Jilha Bank between 12 pm and 12.30 pm with an armed security guard.

Kalaskar had asked the security guard posted at the ATM centre to guard the bank.The security guard and a bank customer told the police they had seen Shinde holding a bag.On why CCTV cameras had not been installed even after repeated appeals by the police, Kalaskar said, "The issue has been discussed with the committee; the proposal to install CCTV will soon be taken up."
