Grid collapse: 3 injured workers still critical

Over 48 hours after a giant concrete girder collapsed at the site of the Sahar elevated road project in Andheri, killing three people and leaving six others injured, three of the injured labourers are fighting for their life.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the three deceased labourers are being sent to their native place in Bihar and West Bengal. At least one labourer is still reported missing and it is feared that he remains trapped under the debris.

One of the injured, 45-year-old Mantu Prasad, underwent multiple surgeries of his hands and neck late on Friday night. His 32-year-old colleague Suresh Prasad, who suffered multiple injuries, is still unconscious and critical, said doctors at the Seven Hills Hospital where the trio is admitted. The other labourer 23-year-old Rajesh Yadav, who sustained multiple fractures including one to the jaw bone, is stable.

But Birendra Das (28), who was rushed to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri, is critical. Doctors from the hospital said they expect Birendra to regain consciousness in the next 48 hours. “My brother is critical and in the ICU. He has not regained consciousness since the accident. He has undergone a surgery and the doctors informed me that he will regain consciousness soon,” said Nandkishore Das, Birendra’s brother.

The other two injured, 27-year-old Vinod Kumar Yadav and 25-year-old Sunil Kumar are stable. While Yadav is recuperating at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Kumar is admitted at Medicare Hospital in Andheri.

Twenty-seven-year-old Arun Kumar, who was working at the site at the time of the accident, is missing and may still be trapped under the debris. All the victims had come to the city for work from UP, Bihar and Bengal and had no relatives here. Sources at Cooper Hospital confirmed that the bodies of the deceased are being sent to their native places.u00a0
