58-year-old man fires three bullets at crooks in an act of self defence; police still looking for the other two thieves that fled the scene

When three miscreants broke into a home opposite the Meenakshi temple in Hulimavu near Bannerghatta and tried to get away with a sandalwood tree in the enclosed compound they were taken in by surprise when the vigilant homeowner started firing at them.

Jairamaiah C (58) and his family were fast asleep at 1:30 am when their five pet dogs started barking while the house abruptly lost electricity.

Jairamaiah has also started teaching his daughter how to use a gun for protection's sake.

Wondering what was causing the commotion, owner of a machine tools manufacturing company Jairamaiah, peered out of the window and saw that two men were cutting down a sandalwood tree, while the other miscreant was keeping a lookout.

"When I saw them I decided to bring out my single barrel gun and scare them away, so I shot three times. Once in the air and when they started to come towards the house I shot twice at the poachers.

I got the license of the gun when the Ayodhya riots broke out. I never thought I would have to use the gun," said Jairamaiah.

"I am also teaching my daughter how to use the gun," he added. Of the three unidentified alleged poachers, one was shot dead.

The other two are currently absconding. Jairamaiah after firing the shots immediately called in the police. The police also brought in a sniffer dog.

B N S Reddy, DCP (East), arrived at the scene and said, "This was clearly a case of self defence. The homeowner had a licenced weapon, he used to protect his family.

We know that one of the alleged poachers has suffered a bullet injury and we have informed all hospitals to keep a lookout from someone who might come in with such an injury."

He added, "Initial investigations show that the deceased was a Tamilian. We have recovered his cell phone and diary, which is written in Tamil. A compliant has been filed in this matter."u00a0
