Handicapped Mumbai man nabbed for trafficking girls

Officials of the Vakola police station recently arrested 49- year- old Nandlal Mane, a resident of Gajdarband in Santacruz (W), for human trafficking.

Mane was accused of targeting girls from poor families, luring them with a promise of a good lifestyle and forcing them into flesh trade within the country or abroad. One of his latest victims was a 16- year- old girl from Vakola area.

A disabled, Mane would target girls in Santacruz, Kandivli and Virar areas and lure them with a promise of a far better life but would force them into prostitution instead.

Officials said while they have detained almost a dozen people for their suspected involvement in human trafficking, one of Mane’s accomplices, a woman, is still at large. It has been learnt that about 10 girls have gone missing from Vakola in the last six months and the police have failed to trace any of the girls.

The mother of the 16- yeargirl said, “ She left home on July 7 for collecting her Std X result from her school, but never returned. We then lodged a complaint at the police station.” Mane was produced in the court and has been remanded in police custody till July 16.

PSI Kisan Mane of the Vakola police station said, “ We have arrested Mane under Section 366 A of the IPC.” Source in the police station said during investigation, Mane claimed that he met the girl near the school and then he dropped her at Santacruz railway station.

“ Despite intense interrogation, he is refusing to cooperate and give further details. Search for the minor girl is still on.”
