A 19-year-old girl who worked in a mall has allegedly committed suicide after being harassed at her workplace as she was caught shoplifting a garment. The deceased’s family have registered an FIR against the store manager, security guard and housekeeper who allegedly harassed her, at Deccan police station. The girl, Amruta, had been working for the last two months in an apparel shop at Pune Central Mall.

After the store employees harassed the girl, she went to Khadakwasla and jumped into a canal near her house. File pic

On August 7, she changed the price tag of a garment and planned to carry it in her bag without billing it. However, the security guard caught her when the anti-theft buzzer went off. He called the manager who, along with a female security guard, checked her bag and found the garment.

Praveen Chougle, senior police inspector of Deccan police station, said, “Her family has alleged that after the incident the trio harassed the girl and even hit her in three different cabins on the pretext of checking her.”

Following the harassment, she went to Khadakwasla and jumped into a canal near her house. “The primary investigation is ongoing and while we have not arrested anyone yet, we have lodged an FIR against the trio.

Since there was no suicide note, we cannot prove that the girl decided to end her life because of the incident,” added Chougle.
