HC grants bail to Vinod Chembur on health grounds
Seventeen months after he was arrested for his alleged role in the murder of MiD DAY Editor (Special Investigations) Jyotirmoy Dey, the Bombay High Court granted bail to bookie Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur on medical grounds yesterday.
The court acted on medical reports asking to treat Asrani’s case ‘sympathetically’, owing to his failing health. A division bench of Justices VM Kanade and PD Kode noted, “The applicant is in a very critical condition and needs to be operated immediately on account of his liver failure.”
In his report to the court, Dr JB Bhavani, head of Urology and Deputy Superintendent at St George’s Hospital, said, “I request you to consider this case sympathetically considering his end-stage liver failure and request the liver transplant authorities to perform early liver transplantation.”
The High Court has released Asrani on a bail of Rs 50,000 with sureties for a period of six months, which can be further extended if needed with the leave of the court.
Asrani’s health has been deteriorating ever since his arrest last year. In October, Asrani was rushed to St George’s Hospital with kidney failure. His health has further deteriorated since then.
Asrani is charged with criminal conspiracy and various other sections of the IPC and the MCOCA. He is alleged to have pointed out Dey to the shooters while he sat at a bar in Mulund. He is also allegedly an aide of gangster Chhota Rajan.
