As 27 speakers come under one roof at the seventh edition of TEDxGateway this Sunday, here's who to watch out for
Capri Everitt
Twelve-year-old Capri Eve-ritt shares the stage with a group of kids at the SOS Children’s Village in Chennai to sing the Indian National Anthem. The Canadian child prodigy pronounces each word distinctly in an applause-worthy performance that was uploaded on YouTube this April. “The Indian National Anthem was one of my favourites. The challenging part was the style — getting the tremors in the melody right,” shares Everitt.

She recently completed a record-setting journey, Around The World In 80 Anthems. Accompanied by her family, she visited 80 countries and sang each National Anthem in the native language to raise money for orphaned, abandoned and abused children. At the event, listen to Everitt’s experiences of singing the anthem at venues, like the Luxembourg Peace Forum to Carnaval Uruguay and at over 40 SOS Children’s Villages around the globe. The list also includes Thailand, Turkey, Peru, Czech Republic, Japan and Norway. “The most challenging anthems I found were Chinese, Polish and the Estonian,” she shares over an email, ahead of her debut visit to Mumbai.
Guilhem Desq
Born to a hurdy gurdy maker in France, Guilhem learnt to play the unusual instrument in his early years and later, the musician even built a modern, electric one for himself. Originating in the Middle Ages in Europe, hurdy gurdy is a wooden, stringed instrument that produces sound by rubbing a wooden wheel on its strings. “Basically, your right hand is turning the wheel, and your left hand is playing on a keyboard to change the pitch of the notes. It goes well with most of the music I have tested so far. This includes traditional French music, Heavy Metal, Rock, Dub, Electro, House, Jazz, World and also, Indian music,” says Desq, who will perform an eight-minute set with Maati Baani, world music duo, who are also speakers at the event. “It is the first time I will be performing in India, but I have already recorded for a Tamil feature film last year,” he informs.
