Mr & Mrs Mehernosh Deboo's three-year-old filly Myrtlewood, lying closer to the wrong end of the field until turning for home, moved up with gigantic strides and swept past the field to sail away for a comfortable victory in the first Classic of the season, the Eat India Company Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr 1) in yesterday's nine-race card.

Myrtlewood was trained by Pesi Shroff and ridden by P S Chouhan. She clocked a brilliant time of 1:35.13 for the mile trip.

"I knew she was the best of my four runners in the fray," trainer Pesi Shroff told mid-day leading in the 1000 Guineas winner, "she always worked very well in the trials, but her form in the actual race was limited to beating Sentimental and Iridescence... you have to show that form in some way in the actual race, she wasn't really doing that. I am happy she finally displayed that form today."
