The Kingfisher Ultra Pune Derby, the plum event of the Pune season which has attracted a field of 14 runners, will feature as stellar attraction of today's nine-race card. Pure Zinc, who excelled when coming out of lay-off to win the SA Poonawalla Million on this track one month ago, will be the cynosure of all eyes, and will most likely be the popular choice. Pure Zinc is trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha and will be ridden by A Imran Khan. Among his prominent rivals are Themis (Imran Chisty up), Perfect Star (S John up) and Lady In Lace (Suraj Narredu up), the last-named pitched in with a late entry fee by her Hyderabad-based trainer KSV Prasad Raju.

The talk in racing circles is whether Pure Zinc can stay the ten-furlong trip of the Derby. I personally feel there is a sizeable gap on the Dynamic Class scale between Pure Zinc and the rest, and this gap may help him hold his own over this trip which he will be tackling for the first time. In case he falters because of the distance, Themis may gain the day as she has already won on this trip at Bangalore. The joker in the pack is Rochester, the Sunderji-trained colt who has run his worst and best races back-to-back on this track in that order.
