Trainer Pesi Shroff continued his domination of the graded races at Mahalaxmi by winning yet another prime event, the grade 2, Ramniwas Ramnarain Ruia Gold Cup, feature event of Sunday's nine-race card. Running only the fourth race of his life, Onassis (Glory Of Dancer out of Rahy's Serenade), posted an authoritative victory to storm into the Indian Derby picture as predicted in this column on Sunday.
It is another matter that Cabriolet (P Mulrennan up) from the same stable was more fancied by the crowd than Onassis on whom jockey B Prakash got a chance ride in place of the declared English rider K Fallon. The Indian ace who is picking up pieces of his old form capitalized on his good luck and put up a great riding display astride the property of Mr & Mrs Vijay Shirke, KN Dhunjibhoy & Farouq Rattonsey to win the race that is considered by some to be the traditional pointer to the McDowell Indian Derby scheduled for Sunday, February 7, 2010, at the same track.
With the Pune Derby winner Versaki going out of the Indian Derby contention due his lacklustre show in the 2000 Guineas, Shroff seems to be holding all the aces for the blue riband of the Indian turf as Jacqueline (the 'Guineas' double winner), Bruckner (Kolkata Derby winner) and now Onassis, are all trained by him. Interestingly, all three run in the colours of Vijay Shirke who's having the most incredible season along with his prime partner and friend Khushroo Dhunjibhoy.
