How Ankeet Chavan's lawyers successfully got him interim bail

Mumbai-based Rajasthan Royals player Ankeet Chavan will thank his lawyers emphatically for successfully arguing his case for interim bail which was granted by a Delhi court yesterday. Chavan can thus marry Neha on June 2. They were engaged on July 1, 2012 in Mumbai.

Chavan and Neha know each other from their college days. It is learnt that the wedding will now be a low-key affair after the cricketer was picked up for alleged spot fixing on May 16.

Sacrosanct occasion
“We argued that marriage is a sacrosanct occasion which comes once in a lifetime. The engagement took place in July last year,” said Chavan’s lawyer Rajiv Shankar Dvivedi from Delhi.

According to the order (a copy of which is with this correspondent) passed by the Special Judge Vinay Kumar Khanna says:

(i) applicant/accused shall not directly or indirectly make any inducement threat, or promise to any person acquainted with the facts of the case, so as to dissuade him to disclose such facts to the Court or to the investigating agency.

(ii) shall not leave India and shall surrender his passport before the Court. He shall surrender before the Court on 06.06.2013.

The order revealed the advance marriage plans and that it, “would take place immediately on the completion of the IPL. The preparation of marriage are complete, marriage halls have been booked, jewellery, clothes and other items have already been purchased and even the invitation cards have been distributed to friends, relatives and acquaintances.”

Chavan’s lawyers also brought up the fact that the cricketer’s father suffers from several ailments like hypertension, arthritis and blood pressure.

A cousin of the bride submitted an affidavit alongwith the wedding invitation card and “other documents pertaining to bookings, purchase of articles have been placed on record in support of his submissions.”

Chavan was not brought to the court yesterday. He is scheduled to leave for Mumbai this morning.u00a0
