Sign-up for workshops on Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement where the proceeds will go towards rural areas of Maharashtra

The Japanese are known for their finesse in anything that involves art, and here’s an opportunity to learn one of their art forms, while supporting a cause.

The Bombay Sogetsu School, a school teaching Ikebana — the Japanese art of flower arrangement for several years now, will conduct workshops for its annual fund-raiser. The proceeds from the workshops and demonstrations will fund several developmental activities for the tribal regions near Mangaon in Maharashtra.

Ikebana arrangements make use of several parts of a plant other than flowers and believe in minimalism

“The demonstrations and workshops will benefit beginners and experts. For our master class, international Ikebana expert Fanae Maeda will do a demonstration. Several senior teachers from the Sogetsu School will also be a part of this event,” shares Renu Saraf, Deputy Director of the school.

Those interested in learning the craft can also sign up for the demonstration on November 28 by Leela Raj Kumar, who has now been teaching Ikebana for almost 45 years. The organisers have also planned a full-day workshop in Lonavala, though they are almost booked for the workshop, “If we conduct a full-day workshop in the city, people want to rush through; Ikebana on the contrary requires you to be one with nature and at peace. Hence, Lonavala was chosen as the venue,” says Saraf. These workshops and demonstrations will teach, traditional and contemporary styles as well as feature abstract installations.

For the final day, the school has organised Just Leaves, a demonstration that will teach the art of decorative arrangement using only leaves, followed by a flower jewellery making session.
