London: Jose Mourinho’s sacking by Chelsea was depicted as an early Christmas carve up on Friday as the British press reported he had been let go after a holiday lunch with players.

Mourinho's tumultuous second spell as Chelsea manager was ended 'by mutual consent' on Thursday, with the club's technical director Michael Emenalo revealing that squad disharmony was a significant factor.

According to reports, the Portuguese coach oversaw training at the Blues’ Cobham training ground and even attended the club’s annual Christmas lunch just hours before he was sacked.

The reports add that Mourinho was told of his fate by chairman Bruce Buck and director Eugene Tenenbaum in a meeting which lasted just 10 minutes. A hooded man, presumably Mourinho, was then spotted being driven out of the club by a chauffeur. While earlier reports claimed this was the 52-year-old, publications like The Sun later pointed out that the man was not Mourinho.

In essence, Mourinho will be put on 'gardening leave' and the club will continue paying him his salary until he finds employment at another club.
