Whether it's the romantic Maine Payal Hai Chankayi or the folksy Indra Mirva Gayee Thi, singer Falguni Pathak knows how to wow the crowds.

I love playing garba and dandiya myself: Falguni Pathak

“I owe my career and success to the Navratri festival,” says the lady who resurfaces every year to make people dance on and on for hours at dandiyas across Mumbai. Falguni, who will be performing at Goregaon, talks to CS as she gears up for the festival:

In prep mode
We began our preparations two months ago. All of us went to Gujarat to hear new garba songs. Then, my musicians and I sat at home and set the songs to dandiya beats. The last part was when we go to the venue/auditorium 10-15 days back and started rehearsing. It’s a very hectic period. During the dandiyas I will be at the event from 4 pm and stay there till midnight, when the garbas get over. The idea is to give paisa vasool entertainment to the people for those three-four hours.

Tomboy talk
To be honest, I never thought of my trouser and jacket look as being fashionable. I like to wear what I am comfortable in. As a kid, I used to be either in my school uniform or in T-shirts and pants. My friends in my colony were all boys. I was never the girl who liked wearing chaniya choli, jewellery and makeup. Over the years, I have just improvised on my patent style.

Festive mood
I love playing garba and dandiya myself. As a schoolgirl, I used to go for the dances for the full ten days. They used to be held at MVM School, Khar, where I studied. I love the Mataji ka garba songs, Pari Hoon Main, Indra Mirva and Adivasi folk songs. I am a very religious person and observe the puja for nine days at home with ‘Sthapana’.

Concert high
I guess it has to be of my first shows in 1994. Prior to that, I used to sing songs for other groups, collect my payment and go home. But forming your own group was a lot of responsibility. I had to select my musicians, choose the songs, form the flow of the show, et al. But I was thrilled when I saw that more than 10,000 people had turned up at my very first show. It was at BN Chatralaya Ground, Juhu. The fact that I could overcome all challenges and make it successful was indeed a great thing for me.
