Draped in an elegant sari, Sudha Murthy's greying hair belies her youthful spirit. The lady, known for her philanthropy, is noted for her simplicity.

I love to share my experiences: Sudha Murthy

And this endearing quality reflects on her writings as well. On a promotional tour to Mumbai, Murthy mentions that she used to be a regular reader of this particular tabloid during her early days in the city. No wonder the Bangalore-based writer who started with Kannada before switching to English is fluent in Marathi too! In a tête-à-tête with CS, Sudha shares the factors that drive her as a wordsmith and a person:

Sudha Murthy
Who: Sudha Murthy
What: On her writing and inspirations

Inspiration behind words
My life has been my greatest inspiration. Besides, I write because I love to share my experiences and stories. I don’t bother about what others write or whether I’m up to their standards or not. I’ve been writing for 35 years now and for the past one decade, I’ve been actively writing in English. My books are an extension of my work but it’s not a job. Writing them is like a vacation to me.

The art of storytelling
It’s an art form. One should know what to convey and how to convey; especially when you’re writing for kids. Children books are not difficult to come up with but they aren’t easy either. One has to make sure that the words are right yet simple. Personally, it takes me more time to pen a children’s book than an adult’s.

Bollywood connection
I love Bollywood. In fact, I recently watched English Vinglish and enjoyed it thoroughly. Sridevi was lovely in it. Hrithik Roshan is my favourite actor. The dynamics of filmmaking differ a lot from the making of a book but I’m open to the idea of my stories getting adapted into films provided their core remains the same.

Favourite writers
It depends on the mood but I prefer British writers because I like the way theyu00a0use English not only in their speech but also in their writings. I admire a lot of
our Indian writers too. Interestingly, some of most brilliant writers are from a regional background.

No row, whatsoever!
The reason why I don’t find myself in controversies is because I prefer speaking the truth. That’s also why I don’t have to remember what I said earlier. It’s not a conscious decision to be like this way but then, that’s who I am. u00a0
