It has been a little over three months since Yuvraj Singh made that famous comeback in a Twenty20 game against New Zealand, after winning a battle against cancer.

Since then, he has played in a few Ranji Trophy games, three Test matches against England, and played a major role in India’s win in the first T20 against England on Thursday. However, the man himself agrees that he still is some distance away from being at his best, batting-wise as well as fitness-wise.

After taking three wickets with his left-arm spin and scoring a crucial 21-ball 38 at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Thursday, Yuvraj said he is getting there, but still needs some time and a lot of hard work.

“I have to work harder and more hours to be where I was (before being diagnosed with cancer). I cannot tell you in percentages about how much I have recovered, but I need to work hard. I also have to get confidence by winning matches for India. More often I do that, better it would be to my confidence,” Yuvraj said.

Fielding is one aspect, in which Yuvraj Singh looks some distance away from his best. He is not diving and zooming in the throws the way he has done for most part of his career. With the likes of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Ajinkya Rahane occupying important positions on the field, Yuvraj was often reduced to field at mid-on, mid-off and square-leg on Thursday.

“With so many youngsters in the team, fielding is one aspect that’s got to be better. I have already started feeling like a veteran in the T20 team now,” a smiling Yuvraj said.u00a0Yuvraj also acknowledged that the T20 format suits him a bit better compared to the five-day format. When asked about his batting after a disappointing Test series, the left-hander said, “I play a bit more freely in this (T20) format. I am happy that I contributed in the team’s win today, because it was very important for us to win today. It’s the first match of the series, and if you don’t win the first game, you are always trying to win it back.”u00a0
