Sonam made her debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya' in 2007 opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

In 2010, her father and sister Rhea produced a film 'Aisha' starring her. The 28-year-old actress maintains that she is close to her father but does not want to use his fame as a stepping stone. "He has worked so hard all his life to be Anil Kapoor. I don't want to use that for myself because that is all his. I don't want to use that as a stepping stone for myself. He deserves more than that. Suppose I don't do well, I don't want my life to reflect on his life," Sonam told PTI.

"He has his own journey and I don't want to take that away from him. My dad gets very upset as I don't take too many pictures with him or do films or take money from him. He is like 'why am I earning, it is all for you people'.

He is proud of me that I am doing well on my own," she said. Sonam is very fond of her father, who like any regular parent keeps embarrassing her by talking about his daughter's achievements all the time. "It is embarrassing that he talks about me all the time. He clicks pictures and shows to everyone that it's my daughter. It is so embarrassing. I love my dad," Sonam said.

Sonam is happy to have made a place in the industry as a fashionista. "People see me as Anil Kapoor's daughter but they also see me as a fashion icon, Sonam Kapoor who says all the wrong things.

I have really worked to have my own separate identity. I have done it because of my dad," Sonam said. Her films post 'Saawariya' like 'Delhi 6', 'Aisha' 'Thank You' and 'Mausam' failed to click with audience except 'I Hate Love Storys'. "I did introspect about my career. I realised I wasn't comfortable playing these characters as I thought I wasn't convincing or good enough to play them.

At that time I took a conscious decision and stopped signing films. I needed to be proud of the films that I do," she said. Sonam has an interesting range of films lined up for release Anand L Rai's 'Ranjhaana', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', a biopic on legendary sportsman Milkha Singh, where she is paired opposite Farhan Akhtar. She is also doing a film with YRF opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and also the remake version of 'Khubsoorat'.u00a0
