The action was taken on seven commercial complexes, including a hotel, as their owners failed clearing parking areas on their own even after the getting demolition notices from the civic body a fortnight ago.u00a0

Giant PMC earthmovers lumbered into the premises of Da Casa hotel, Nana Peth, in the noon. It took them around five hours to level the reception desk and waiting room of the hotel, illegally built on the space -- measuring 3,000 sq ft -- meant for parking lot.

The demolition team also ran its bulldozers over the illegal constructions of Men's Avenue and brought down an illegally extended shade of Dr Limaye's dispensary.u00a0The Building Inspector of the department, Satish Kharat, told MiD DAY that the total area demolished was more than 6,000 sq feet. "We will recover whatever expenditure is incurred in carrying out this drive from the owners of these complexes," he added.u00a0

"We had also sent notice to Ashtekar Brothers. They have complied and cleared their illegal constructions on their own," said Kharat.u00a0When contacted the managements of the commercial complexes and the hotel in question refused to comment on the demolition drive.u00a0
