Day 2: Kohli double ton breaks records; South Africa struggle at 36/3

India's cricket team captain Virat Kohli celebrates after scoring a century (100 runs) on the second day of the second Test cricket match between India and South Africa at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune

India declared their first innings at 601 for 5 while South African batsmen struggled as the visitors were at 36 runs for the loss of 3 wickets on Day 2 of the second Test in Pune on Friday.

Skipper Virat Kohli emerged as the highest scorer for India, scoring an unbeaten 254, while opener Mayank Agarwal (108) and Ravindra Jadeja (91) also chipped in with useful contributions. Kagiso Rabada claimed three wickets for South Africa.

In reply, South Africa went off to a bad start as they lost 3 early wickets. Indian pacers Umesh Yadav ( 2 wickets) and Mohammad Shami (1 wicket) starred with the ball as they rattled the South African batsmen on the field. Umesh Yadav was selected as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah as the latter had a stress fracture and is undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom.

Virat Kohli broke quite a few records as he overtook Sir Don Bradman as the Test captain with most 150+ runs. Kohli now has 9 scores over 150 while Sir Don Bradman had 8. They are followed by Michael Clarke, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara, Graeme Smith.

As he scored the double hundred, Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag as a batsman with the most double hundreds by an Indian batsman in Test cricket.

At tea, Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 194 runs off 286 balls with a strike rate of 67.83. Virat Kohli hit a total of 28 boundaries en route to his century, the last which brought his ton at the tea session. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane played the perfect role as supporting hero as he too brought up his fifty. Rahane ended up scoring 59 runs off 168 balls with a strike rate of 35.11. Rahane hit eight boundaries during his innings.

Earlier on Day 1, opener Mayank Agarwal hit his second century in the series as he scored 108 runs in 195 balls with 16 boundaries and 2 sixes. Cheteshwar Pujara also hit a respectable 58 off 112 deliveries.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged all three wickets for 65 runs.
