It took a mistake from Pakistan captain Samar Ishaq in the 14th minute to give India a slender one-goal lead which they managed to hang on to till the end.
India’s right back Nirmal Chhetri tried to pass to an onrushing Sunil Chhetri between two rival defenders in the opposition box but Ishaq, in a bid to keep the Indian captain at bay, made a bad clearance that entered Pakistan’s goal.
India will now face off against Bangladesh in the second league match on tomorrow. The tournament is an acid test of sorts for India coach Wim Koevermans -- who is a year into his reign.
India have only won the Nehru Cup under Koevermans, failing to qualify for the Challenge Cup and the 2015 Asian Cup.u00a0
