Says the lead member of Indian rock band Airport which composed the desi youth anthem for a reality show

'Ghar se hum chale bas ek back pack aur ek guitar/ paiso ki fikar nahi/ bike pe hum sawaar'. This title song of a popular reality show became an youth anthem not very long back. What's more, it gave the band Airport a take-off platform. This Mumbai-based rock band will be performing in the Capital for the first time after entertaining the audiences in the film capital of India.

But is India seeing an evolving trend of rock bands going desi or is it that the country has suddenly woken up to self-actualisation after Rock On!? "No, it is not that bands that are taking a hint from Rock On! but it was the movie that depicted the trends of bands singing Hindi rock songs and taking pride in their language and culture," says Arijit Datta, lead vocalist of Airport. "Nowadays youngsters are composing works in the language they are comfortable in. It's all about expressing yourself," Datta further explains.

Love sex aur dhoka?
The music industry, especially the rock scenario, has been infamous for its indulgence in sex and drugs. From Beatles to Rolling Stones to Guns n Roses, name it and you'll have them in red. Is the Indian rock scenario any different? "Oh surely. We don't jump into the gutter and come on stage before audiences to show how we've messed up with our lives. We are regular people who just love our profession," says Arijit.

Other members of the band include Vinay Lobo as the lead guitarist, Varun Venkit at drums, Amit Ahuja at bass and Zohran Miranda with his rhythm guitar. The band has performed at several youth festivals, corporate events and most recently at the NH7 festival.

Vinay believes that they do not sing for any specific audience. "We perform at pubs as well as for benefit gigs. We want to play for all age groups be it kids or the older people. We only believe in enjoying our work. If we don't like what we are singing, then why will the audience?" he states.

The Capital's rock scene is buzzing with bands like Half Step Down, The Circus, Barefaced Liar and Them Clones among others. Airport will be a novel addition to the bunch with their Hindi rocku00a0 compositions. So fasten your seat belts and get ready for the musical journey. u00a0

Journey so far
Airport is a blend of Hindi pop and rock genre with a flavour of Urdu. The band came into existence in 2009 with five band members. They have played a lot of Jazz, Hindi and poetic music apart from Rock in the past. They also play compositions that are inspired from old classic melodies with sing-along music such as Raat which was their first single as a band.
