Sauber, who will turn 69 on Saturday, announced some time ago that he did not wish to be in the pit when he turned 70. The move was on the cards when Sauber transferred a third of the team’s equity to Kaltenborn as a “gift” at the end of 2011.u00a0

Indian-born Kaltenborn, who holds Austrian citizenship, initially joined Sauber in 2000 to run their legal department but had moved up to the role of CEO in January 2010. She will now additionally take over the role of team principal at trackside with immediate effect.

Sauber, in the meantime, will continue as the president of the board of directors of the Sauber Group of companies and remain responsible for the group’s strategic direction.
