A day after MiD DAY reported on allegations that a doctor had skirted norms to abort a four-and-half-month-old foetus in an HIV positive woman's case, senior officials appointed a three-member committee to look into the matter.
The incident had occurred on April 24 at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cantonment General Hospital, with the hospital staff going on to accuse gynaecologist Dr Archana Gupta of not informing them of the HIV positive status of the patient.
In her defence, Dr Gupta had said that she had had to operate on the patient first and then send her for an HIV test as it was an emergency case. She had also accused the staff of discriminating against HIV positive patients.
The committee, made up of senior doctors and headed by Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) CEO Rachel Koshy, will inquire into the incident and is expected to submit its report within a week, said PCB sources.
Dr Gupta had also been accused by political activists of illegally aborting the foetus as it was a girl child. The allegation was made that the foetus was over 18 weeks, after which it is illegal to abort.
The complainants, backed by hospital nurses and staffers, had said the foetus was taken away by the patient's husband.
