Silvio Berlusconi spent 34 million euros (Rs 212 crore) of his own money last year on antiques, helicopter flights, the services of a disc jockey and gifts for young women, it has been claimed.

Big spender: Silvio Berlusconi

The billionaire prime minister, who is Italy's third richest person, lavished presents on friends and supporters, including 1,20,000 euros (Rs 75 lakh) on ties and scarves.

One of the biggest items on his shopping list was 6,75,000 euros (Rs 4.21 crore) for the rent of a castle, which overlooks the sea near the resort of Portofino on the Italian Riviera. He splashed out almost as much -- 6,50,000 euros (Rs 4.05 crore) -- during spending sprees in art galleries and antique shops.

Among the lucky recipients of his largesse was a disc jockey who was paid 1,00,000 euros (Rs 62 lakh), and Angela Sozio, a former Big Brother contestant was allegedly paid the same amount. The 74-year-old leader spent 9,00,000 euros (Rs 5.61 crore) on gas, water and electricity bills for his home in the Caribbean tax haven of Antigua.

He spent 65,000 euros (Rsu00a0 40 lakh) on jewellery, according to details from a bank account examined during an investigation into his alleged payment of an underage prostitute for sex. He has denied any wrongdoing. According to details of the bank account published by Corriere della Sera, he gave 5,62,000 euros (Rs 3.52 crore) to 14 young women last year and spent nearly half a million euros on helicopter flights.Niccolo Ghedini, one of Berlusconi's lawyers, said the publication of the payments was "a clear violation of privacy".
