Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has ordered an inquiry into JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda's alleged threat to Lokayukta police chief yesterday. He has said that he would ask the authorities concerned to submit a report in a week and initiate further action.

ADGP (Lokayukta) J V Gaonkar had written a letter to the Upa Lokayukta on Tuesday, which was later forwarded to Chief Secretary S V Ranganath, stating that Gowda threatened him on November 7, following the Lokayukta police raid on his son, H D Balakrishna's house to investigate the disproportionate wealth case filed against him.

In the letter, Gaonkar stated that the former prime minister had called him former chief minister Yeddyurappa's slave and accused him of detaining his son's security personnel.

After the disproportionate wealth case had been filed against Balakrishna, the court asked the Lokayukta police to investigate and a series of raids were conducted on his properties a few days ago.

Deve Gowda is alleged to have said, "I thought you were a good officer, but you organised 150 police officers to conduct raids on my son's home, thus you have acted like a slave of Yeddyurappa. Don't think he will protect you all the time."

In his letter to Upa Lokayukta Justice S B Majage further clarified that he enquired with the team of investigating officials and found that no one had been detained as alleged by Deve Gowda.

Reacting to this, Deve Gowda admitted that he called Gaonkar, but said that he did at no point threaten him. "I told him that he was crossing the limits and warned that I would stage a dharna in front of the CM's house like
I did at the previous CM's house, if they continued with their attitude," said Deve Gowda.

It may be recalled that Gaonkar, who is known for his integrity, has drawn ire from many political parties for dispensing his duties honestly.

Interestingly, the state government recently shifted him from Lokayukta's chief post without citing any reason and placed Satyanarayana Rao, whose name has cropped up in the mining report, in his place.
