Four unidentified men in a rickshaw assaulted jeweller and fled with 1.5 kg gold; cops have obtained last four digits of getaway vehicle's number

A Vile Parle-based jeweller was attacked with a chopper and knives and robbed of 1.5 kg of gold on Saturday. None of the four assailants have been identified yet, but one of them is believed to have been an auto driver.

The case was registered on Saturday, but the police only learnt of the exact amount of the stolen booty yesterday, when the victim gained consciousness. The victim, Kushal Khetraj Jain (45), a resident of Chandvarkar Lane in Borivli , is currently being treated at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

According to the Vile Parle police, the incident took place around 7 pm on Saturday.
Jain was walking towards his showroom, Varun Jewellers, located in Azad Road in Vile Parle (East), carrying a bag full of ornaments, when a rickshaw drew up a few metres away.

Two men dismounted from the vehicle and attacked Jain on his hands and legs with a chopper and knives.
A third man got off and pointed a revolver at Jain, while the driver of the vehicle stepped out and snatched the bag of valuables from him. The foursome then retreated to their vehicle and sped away.

Jain screamed for help, and locals rushed to the spot. One of the bystanders informed the Vile Parle police and others rushed him to the hospital.

The police are now trying to track down the auto rickshaw that was used by the robbers, having managed to obtain the last four digits of the rickshaw's number plate, which was noted by an eyewitness.

Case registered
"We have registered a case of robbery against the four accused and are trying to track them down. The victim has sustained serious injuries on his legs and his abdomen," said Narayan Patil, Senior Inspector of Vile Parle police station.
