Akshay Kumar, who normally does four films a year, has started 2017 on a winning note. His new film, Jolly LLB 2, has grossed over Rs 50 crore in its opening weekend. With this, it has recorded the all-time highest weekend for February. It's also the highest non-holiday opening weekend for an Akki film.

The courtroom drama, a sequel to Arshad Warsi-starrer Jolly LLB (2013), got the critics' nod and is also garnering positive word-of-mouth buzz, drawing big crowds into theatres. Trade analyst Amod Mehra feels Akshay's choice of films is what strikes a chord with movie-goers.

"He has proved that one doesn't need a big festival to release a film. He seems to have understood the pulse of the audience and has been doing a variety of roles. His films are also made within a limited budget, so recovery is easier."

Echoing Mehra, distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says, "Akshay might not be an extraordinary performer but he has understood the audience. Besides, popularity of the first Jolly film created curiosity about the sequel."

With exams and civic elections round the corner, Mehra adds weekdays will be the real test for the film.
