There is the small matter of Jose Mourinho reportedly telling friends his United move is a 'done deal'.And United could finally make a move for Athletic Bilbao defender Laporte in the summer.

Ed Woodward was so keen to sign Neymar last season he flew to Catalonia and Manchester United 's interest in the Barcelona forward has not diminished.

United were reportedly prepared to pay £144m for the 24-year-old in the summer and they could vie with neighbours City for the Brazil international, according to The Sun.

Although Anthony Martial has enjoyed an ebullient debut campaign, United have repeatedly tried to acquire a proven world-class forward to boost their attack and look set to make an umpteenth attempt this summer.

The Reds have tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, as well as Neymar, in recent years.United could face competition for John Stones in the summer from Chelsea, who were thwarted in their attempts to sign him last year.

Stones, 21, is among a number of young centre-backs United are monitoring, including Aymeric Laporte and Rapahael Varane.

Despite submitting a transfer request to leave last year, Stones was also spotted house-hunting in Hale around the same time and it is understood United were prepared to intervene had Chelsea had an offer accepted.
