New Delhi: The HRD ministry on Thursday appointed former Allahabad High Court judge Justice Ashok Kumar Roopanwal to head the one-man judicial commission to probe the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula in Hyderabad.

"The ministry has appointed Justice Roopanwal to probe the circumstances leading to the Dalit student's suicide in Hyderabad," said an official of the human resource development ministry.

Vemula, a research scholar at Hyderabad University, committed suicide on January 17 after his suspension along with four other Dalit students from Hyderabad University over an alleged clash with a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The central government had decided to set up a judicial commission to probe the suicide after a fact-finding committee which went to the university submitted its report. The commission will submit its report in three months.
