Jwala blames BWF schedule for double loss
India's star doubles shuttler Jwala Gutta blamed the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) warped scheduling after losing twice on Day One of Olympic badminton competition at the Wembley Arena on Saturday.
Jwala Gutta and V Diju lost their opening group league mixed doubles match against the All-England Champion pair from Indonesia — Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir — 6-21, 12-21 in just 27 minutes.
Thereafter, World Championship bronze medallists Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa were beaten by the Japanese duo of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa in women’s doubles group league tie.
The Indian women lost lost 16-21, 18-21 in 43 minutes. “It’s pretty shocking for it (scheduling blunder) to happen at the Olympics. It is such a big event. Two matches on a day can affect anyone,” said Jwala.
