BMC, traffic police green signal plan mooted by Aaditya Thackeray; 250m of K Dubash Marg to be closed off

Kala Ghoda opens streets to weekend art gallery

Come Sunday and the Kala Ghoda area in Fort will turn into an art gallery, besides having some delicious food on offer. Visitors will be able to enjoy works by various artists with an open art gallery initiative, which the BMC has approved after it was mooted by Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray. With a green signal from the traffic police that will restrict vehicle entry at K Dubash Marg, various amateur and professional artists will be displaying their work along the area.

About 250 metres of K Dubash Marg will be used for the initiative. It will have exclusive space for walkers and no vehicles will be allowed. Thackeray would also be getting young artists on board, who do not have a proper platform to present their art.

Likely to open Sunday
A senior civic official said, “After the approval from the municipal commissioner, we have started cleaning and painting surroundings of K Dubash Marg. We are ready to host the open art gallery, as it does not require any major arrangements. If everything falls in place, it is likely to be open for public on Sunday.”

While Thackeray was not available for comment, a source close to the Sena leader said, “Aaditya has approached several groups of artistes from fine arts, performing arts and crafts. A separate space will be allotted to set up eateries and food stalls.”

Meeting with BMC chief
Last week, Thackeray had met municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and discussed his plan. After this, the commissioner recently gave his approval to one such plan proposed for the K Dubash Marg at Kala Ghoda. According to civic officials, once K Dubash Marg initiative is successfully implemented, two other roads — Nagindas Master Street and Perin Nariman Street, both at Fort — will also pedestrianised for walkers.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A ward Kiran Dighavkar said, “It is a very good initiative and tourists as well as walkers will be able to spend a good time as lots of activities have been planned. As per the plan, on the second and fourth Saturdays and other public holidays, the road will be closed for vehicles. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed to enter.”
