The doctor blamed for negligence which led to a woman delivering a stillborn baby in the corridor of Kamala Nehru hospital on Tuesday, has been suspended and an investigation will commence shortly.

Resident doctor Dayanand Pawar has been accused of turning away Lalita Phulawade (24), and will now face an inquiry by a five-member committee.

Heart wrenching: MiD DAY’s April 25 report on Lalita Phulawade delivering a stillborn baby in the lobby of the Kamala Nehru Hospital

“Pawar has been suspended until the five-member inquiry committee submits its report. The committee includes me, nodal officer of Reproductive Child Health Dr Sanjeev Wavre, paediatrician Dr Vaijayanti Gogawale, a paediatrician from Sassoon hospital and a professor of community medicine at Sassoon hospital,” Dr S T Pardeshi, chief medical officer, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), said.

The post-mortem report indicated cause of death due to umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck, which led to strangulation.

Several doctors in the city agree that negligence could have contributed to the baby’s death. Lalita’s relatives had also alleged negligence after the incident.

Sahdev Phulawade (28), Lalita’s husband, had said that the hospital staff did not admit her wife even though she was in labour and she was forced to deliver the baby in the lobby of the hospital.u00a0
