In the midst of a recent debate on nepotism, filmmaker Karan Johar commented on the struggle of staying relevant in Bollywood. He stated that while becoming a star is not tough, it is hard to hold on to success in the long run. "It is difficult to stay relevant. I will be completing 20 years in the industry in 2019. It is not easy. Getting success is not difficult if you do your job well, but maintaining it is tough," Johar said.

Reflecting on the increasing popularity of the digital media, the filmmaker added that with newer avenues of entertainment being made available, younger crop of actors will struggle to enjoy the kind of success that the Khans - Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir - have enjoyed. "I think the Khans have had a legacy of great cinema and longevity. All of them have been around for three decades and they have built an equity of audience who only watched [their] films. It is a big challenge for the younger actors to live up to the audience base that has been created them."
