A timely, unbeaten 301 in the Purshottam Shield Cricket Tournament helped southpaw opener Kevin D'Almeida make a comeback after two years to the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Hyderabad to be played in Raipur from December 23-27.

However, the defending champions will miss the services of opener Akhil Herwadkar, middle-order batsman Shubham Ranjane and pacer Dhawal Kulkarni.

Eknath, Praful join Kevin
The Mumbai selectors have also brought in another in-form batsman Eknath Kerkar, Praful Waghela and off-spinner Akshay Girap in the 15-member squad. Fit-again pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu (Jr) and left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil are also included in the squad.

It was a sweet reward for D'Almeida's effort whose 301 on Sunday helped his team MIG CC beat Dadar Parsee Colony SC by a huge margin of 318 runs.

Maulik Merchant, cricket secretary of PJ Hindu Gymkhana, which has been conducting this prestigious tournament for the last 101 years, yesterday told mid-day that D'Almeida's feat was the first by any cricketer in its history. However, Mumbai chief selector and former skipper Milind Rege pointed out that the Little Master Gavaskar was the first batsman to score a triple ton in Purshottam Shield and not D'Almeida.

Gavaskar holds the record
“Sunil Gavaskar, playing for Dadar Union SC, scored an unbeaten 301 against PJ Hindu Gymkhana in the Purshottam Shield final. My congratulations to D'Almeida for this performance,” Rege said.
