World No. 3 Kidambi Srikanth yesterday slammed the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) decision to make it mandatory for the top 15 singles players to play 12 tournaments in a calendar year.

The Hyderabadi felt the new ruling would hamper in maintaining optimum fitness standards for shuttlers. "Playing 12 tournaments in a year is a big ask. Every time when you push yourself beyond 100 per cent, you may get injured, but that is the only way you can become a champion. I don't think I will be able to play 12 tournaments in a year anyway because it is too much of a workload for my body," Srikanth told mid-day on the sidelines of a function yesterday where he was named Bridgestone India's worldwide brand ambassador along with boxer MC Mary Kom, wrestler Sakshi Malik and long distance runner Lalita Babar.

Srikanth insists on choosing quality over quantity. "The aim is to keep myself fit; I am not worried about my ranking. It is all about doing well in the tournaments that I participate," added Srikanth, who won a record four Super Series titles in a calendar year last year.

Srikanth, 25, is hopeful of India's chances of winning medals at April's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. "Last year has been terrific for Indian shuttlers. When it comes to team events, it's important for everyone to gel well and deliver what the team requires. We have a good chance to win a gold this time. It's important to continue with our good form," he concluded.
