"I'm assamese, and I grew up watching my grandmother spin yarn and weave on her backstrap loom. I remember all the colours, and how blues and yellows would come together to form a brilliant shade of green," says Julie Kagti, whose fascination with the loom led her to pursue a career in textile design.

Kagti, who received her training in Mumbai, will be in town for a workshop to introduce youngsters to the art of weaving. Although she has previously conducted workshops for adults, this is the first one she is holding for kids. As such, it will involve basic weaving methods that are easy to learn and adapt.

"I will teach them how to stretch the warp taut on the loom, then pass the weft through it to create patterns. There will be colourful yarn for them to pick from, as well as materials like tinsel and wool. Kids can let their imagination run wild," she says, adding that at the end of the two-and-a-half hour session, the kids will get to take home their creations. "It's okay even they don't get everything right. It's a beginners' workshop, and meant to be fun," she reminds, sharing that the session is open to those aged between seven and 12 years.

Kagti has spent over two decades working in the textile industry, and reveals that through workshops, she hopes to raise awareness about weaving, which is an integral part of India's rich heritage. "It's like art appreciation. People often look at handwoven sarees and ask why they are so expensive. My aim is to get them to understand the kind of painstaking work that goes into making a single saree."
