A 90-year-old man succumbed to head injuries after being hit by a bus while crossing the road last morning. The accident took place at Cadell Road near Shivaji Park at 8 am. The bus is owned by Sai Care travels, and the driver Maheshwar Kashiram Palkar (56) is in police custody.

The driver did not desert the victim, identified as Michael Swamy Chettiar. He first took Chettiar to a private hospital where he was denied admission, and subsequently took him to KEM Hospital in Parel, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Shivaji Park police later lodged a case against the driver under section 279 and 338 of the IPC for rash driving. “We have registered a case against driver and have taken him for medical examination. We will present him before the court on Wednesday after which the future course of action will be decided,” said Anant Shinde Police Sub-Inspector of Shivaji Park police station.

Michael was the president of the Catholic Devangar Sanjam of Matunga. Sharin, his granddaughter said, “We believe that it wasn’t the bus driver’s fault. The accident took place due to Papa’s weak eyesight. There is no point blaming the driver and we plan to withdraw all charges against him.”

Relatives and friends described Chettiar as young at heart. “Despite having difficulty walking, he never stopped going out. We told him not to go out alone but he never listened to us. He said he wanted to go for a walk,” said a relative.

The police, in spite of having lodged a case against the driver, said that the slippery road is most likely to have caused the accident. Even though the driver had applied the brakes, the bus skidded and hit the man. u00a0
